Introduction
Bidii Yetu No Limits is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, registered in New Mexico and is dedicated to promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities through sports.
In 2023 Bidii Yetu No Limits had a Vision to create a world in which people with impairments discover the strength to overcome barriers that hold them back, regardless of their disability.
To this end Bidi Yetu had three objectives in 2023, namely:
- Demonstrate what people with disabilities can achieve once barriers to their impairment are lifted.
- Generate awareness of the poverty cycle in which millions of people living with disabilities are trapped.
- Raise funds and equipment for organisations of people with disabilities in the countries on our route.
Their mission was exemplified by organizing adaptive and able-bodied cycling events, such as a notable journey that the organised covering over 3,000 kilometres across five countries in Southern Africa.
A team of adaptive and able-bodied cyclists pedalling over 2,000 miles in the longest handcycling event in the world crossing 5 countries in southern Africa from Swakopmond Namibia to Maputo Mozambique.
Furthermore, Bidii Yetu showed their commitment to creating awareness and grow the sport of Adaptive Cycling by donating money raised during the cycling event, to various organisations involved in Adaptive Cycling, including DiSA.
Bidii Yetu No Limits & DiSA Partnership
In 2023 Bidii Yetu No Limits contacted DiSA to share their objectives and inquire about information that could assist them.
A partnership was formed and in June 2024 DiSA was informed by Bidii Yetu that they would provide funding to DiSA to create more awareness for Adaptive Cycling in South Africa.
In 2024, after completing this amazing event, Bidii Yetu No Limits joined our "Accessible Cities South Africa (AC - SA)" platform by providing funding to DiSA to help promote adaptive cycling and create awareness for the benefits of sport for persons with disabilities.
Through the funding provided by Bidii Yetu, DiSA will:
- Create 4 awareness videos covering various topics including the benefits of sports such as Adaptive Cycling for persons with disabilities.
- Provide free advertising over 2 years on the DiSA website to promote 5 selected Sports Clubs that provide Adaptive Cycling for persons with disabilities.
- Provide advice to select clubs looking to become more accessible to persons with disabilities.
Thereby promoting the sport of Adaptive Cycling to persons with disabilities and making the information about these clubs easily accessible through our information service.
Through this partnership between DiSA and Bidii Yetu, we look forward to growing the sport of Adaptive Cycling to make it truly accessible to all persons with disabilities.
Key Benefits of Partnership
This initiative demonstrated the capabilities of individuals with disabilities, raised awareness about the challenges they face, and generated support for disability organisations along their route, including Disability info South Africa NPC.
Through the support received from Bidii Yetu, DiSA aims to expand its efforts to promote inclusive sports and activities. As part of this initiative with Bidii Yetu, DiSA is developing four Sports Educational Videos, each highlighting different aspects of adaptive sports and their benefits.
These videos will introduce viewers to the opportunities available for persons with disabilities in South Africa, including adaptive cycling and its role in rehabilitation. By sharing stories of individuals who have benefited from adaptive sports and featuring clubs that provide these sports, the videos and information provided in the adverts will serve as an essential resource for those looking to get involved in recreational or competitive activities.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between athletes with disabilities and the resources they need to participate fully, whether in specialized disability sports clubs or inclusive mainstream clubs working to improve accessibility.
Additionally, DiSA will utilize its expertise in Universal Access to help these clubs enhance their accessibility, ensuring that facilities such as clubhouses, restrooms, and transport options are inclusive for all members.
By making information about adaptive sports and accessible clubs easily available, DiSA is empowering individuals with disabilities to take control of their health and leisure activities.
The videos and advertisements will help dispel misconceptions surrounding disability and sports while promoting independence, rehabilitation, and social inclusion. Increased awareness of adaptive cycling and other sports will also encourage more clubs to become inclusive, fostering a greater sense of belonging for athletes of all abilities.
