Introduction
Some people who suffer from some form of Intellectual Impairment, can also battle with Mobility Impairments. They can also develop a mobility impairment through old age. There are a variety of assistive devices that can help you, if your mobility is also effected. Assistive devices include:

Home Automation Aids
Home Automation Aids are those Assistive devices that are used in homes to make every day activities in the homes easier for people with Mobility Impairments. No matter how technologically behind-the-times you think you are, you likely use some form of automation in your home every day. Typical examples of basic automation include smart TV's, automatic door & garage-door openers, alarm clocks, timers on a coffee machine & remote controls.
However, when we talk about home automation and smart homes, the capabilities go quite a bit further. Instead of individual devices working independently, a smart home integrates multiple sub-systems that are all controlled by a master home automation controller, which receives input from all devices around the home, issues commands & controls everything.

Hoists, Lifts & Transferring Aids
If you are elderly, or your Intellectual Impairment also causes a Mobility Impairment, you may need help from Assistive devices such as Hoists, Lifts & Transferring Aids to transfer from their wheelchair to the bed or visa-versa. Those with good upper body mobility and strength can do most transfers on their own or with the assistance of a transfer board.
High-level quads, like me, need assistance. This can be done with the use of a hoist or manually with the aid of a helper or helpers. This may or may not include a transfer board.
Those & other mobility impaired individuals & elderly may need lifts to maneuver from one floor of their house or apartment to the next.
Thankfully there are a wide variety of different types of Lifts, Hoists, Transfer Boards & Draw Sheets available, that can assist us with these daily tasks.

Mobility Aids
A mobility aid is a device designed to assist walking or otherwise improve the mobility of people with a mobility impairment. There are a wide variety of products which can help people with mobility impairments, these include:
- Walking aids such as walking sticks, crutches, and walkers, which are for those individuals who need assistance walking.
- Mobility Scooters.
- Wheelchairs, their are a wide variety of different types, such as Manual wheelchairs, Electric wheelchairs.
- Shower Chairs/Commodes are for those individuals with more severe disabilities who need assistance getting from the bed to the shower, etc.
- Sports Wheelchairs. Their are also a large variety of different chairs that are used in a variety of different sports & activities that people in wheelchairs can take part in. Examples of these activities include Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Dancing, Off-Road activities & Mountain climbing etc.

Pressure Care Products
Pressure care is an important area in all aspects of health care, especially for the elderly, bedridden or those with mobility Impairments. Bed sores or pressure sores, are not only uncomfortable for patients, but they ultimately end up costing a great deal of money, time and effort to heal. In some cases they could even lead to amputation or death.

Vehicle Aids
For Individual living with severe Mobility Impairments, transportation is always an issue & obstacle that one needs to overcome. Individuals with Impaired Mobility often require a special type of motor vehicle with which to transport themselves & there mobility aid. An adapted automobile is often used for this purpose.
Advances in technology have allowed for many new driving controls to become available, which is giving independence back to many people with disabilities that want to drive. If you’re ready to get back behind the wheel, there are many handicap vans, conversion kits, Wheelchair lifts, ramps or hoists, customized according to your needs, which can get you back on the road safely.
