Adjustable Beds

Adjustable Beds are great Assistive devices and are excellent for pressure relief and also provide various other benefits. There are a wide variety of different types of Adjustable Beds, including Electronically Adjustable Beds, Semi Electric Adjustable Beds and Manually Adjustable Beds. Adjustable Beds are also available in a variety of different Models; Types & Styles, not all Adjustable Beds offer the same types of functions & benefits, all Adjustable Beds however, do include some tilt functions, which offer various benefits, including assisting in giving pressure relief and assisting you to achieve a sleeping position that provides correct support to your body and spine, as well as helping to distribute your weight evenly across the bed. Besides giving pressure relief, the tilt function has a variety of other benefits and can assist people if:

  • They need to be turned or pulled back in bed.
  • They need to sit up slightly in bed, because they have a chest problem, or want to eat, read, or enjoy other hobbies in bed, such as Knitting, Surfing the internet via a laptop or tablet or Scrap Booking.
  • They have poor circulation, varicose veins, sleep apnea, snoring problems, back pain, fibromyalgia, leg swelling, etc.
  • They need to transfer from the bed to the chair or visa versa.

There are two main types of Adjustable Beds available, these include Hospital Adjustable Beds and Home Care Adjustable Beds. There are distinct differences between these types of Adjustable Beds, which you need to know about before you decide which one to purchase.

Hospital Adjustable Beds

Hospital Beds have a great deal to offer people who are frequently in and out of hospitals, have limited mobility, or require assistance with Bed Bathing, Turning, Pressure Relief and Getting in and out of bed. Hospital Beds offer adjustability for the head and feet as well as the ability to raise or lower the bed for easier transfers. Another major benefit of Hospital Beds is that the costs of buying Hospital Beds are covered by some Medical Aids, but the downside is that there is a limited selection when it comes to size or style of Hospital Beds, they are typically designed for one person to occupy them and look like beds that are used in Hospitals.

There are three main types of Hospital Adjustable Beds, they include:

  •  A Manual Adjustable Hospital Bed
  • A Semi Electric Adjustable Hospital Bed
  • A Full Electric Adjustable Hospital Bed

These types of Hospital Beds vary in price, with the Manual Adjustable Hospital Beds generally being the cheapest but not offering the same  range of positions and advantages as an Electric Adjustable Hospital Bed. Each person is unique, so will require a Hospital Bed that not only suits their pocket, but will also suite their requirements. Please read the article below to find out more about the pros and cons of these different types of Hospital Beds and to find out which companies can provide them.

Manual Hospital Beds

Manual Hospital Beds are medical beds that use hand cranks to raise the entire bed level, as well as the head and foot sections of the bed. Manual Hospital Beds are a cost effective solution and ideal for patients who either have a caretaker or who have the ability to use the hand crank to raise and lower the bed. The positions and height of Manual Hospital Beds are controlled manually, using a crank, so anytime you want to change the position of the bed there is manual labor required, if the patient does not require constant position changing, a Manual Bed might be the best option. Some Manual Hospital Beds don’t have the same range of positions as an electrical bed has, so if the patient needs to be put in many different positions, an Electrical Hospital Bed might be a better option. As mentioned above, Manual Hospital Beds are usually a lot cheaper, so if there is a caregiver that is able to do this adjustment work, the Manual Hospital bed is definitely the most economical way to go. These Manual Hospital Beds are available throughout South Africa and are sold by various companies and include products such as:

Semi Electric Hospital Beds

Semi Electric Hospital Beds have a motor that controls the adjustments needed for the feet and head, so with the push of a button you can easily change those positions, however the height of the bed is still manually adjusted, so if the patient needs the head and leg rests to be re-positioned frequently, but you do not need the height of the bed adjusted often, a semi electric bed might be perfect for you. These Semi Electric Hospital Beds are usually a bit more expensive than the manual beds, but you get the added benefit of not having any manual work needed to adjust the two ends of the bed. These beds are available throughout South Africa and are sold by various companies such as Mobility Aids, Pro Mobility, Sheer Mobility, Sitwell, Solutions Medical, contact them to find out more about the products they sell, or contact companies such as Pro Mobility, Mobility Aids, or Solutions Medical, to rent out a Hospital Bed, or visit our Equipment To Hire Page - Hospital Beds to find out what is available in South Africa.

Full Electric Hospital Beds

Full Electric Hospital Beds are plugged into an outlet and are controlled with a remote that usually attaches to the side of the bed, using this remote, the different positions of the bed can be changed very easily, thus eliminating the need for any manual labor. In addition to the control of the feet and head, the height of a full electric bed can easily be changed with the push of a button, which can be important if the patient needs the bed to be lowered often to make it safer to get in and out of bed, and then raised again to allow caregivers to reach the patient easily for Bed Bathing or Turning. If this is something that will be a necessity, a full electric hospital bed would be the best option of the three basic types of hospital beds. There are a variety of types and models of these Beds which are available throughout South Africa and are sold by various companies, they include products such as:Electric Three Function Hospital Bed

Home Care Adjustable Beds

Home Care Adjustable Beds offer many lifestyle benefits, including most of the benefits of Hospital Beds mentioned above offer, but they don't look like Hospital Beds. Many Home Care Adjustable Beds also come with very high quality mattresses and massage features which are optional with some Home Care Beds and help with both pressure and pain relief as well as blood circulation. These features help avoid pressure sores, which is especially important if you spend long periods in bed. Home Care Adjustable Beds are also available in both Electric and Manual Adjustable Beds and a variety of sizes, including Single, Three Quarter and Double Beds. Some companies also sell Double Beds which are divided in two sections, so that you & your partner can be at two different levels. These Double Beds are not only necessary for couples but also offer various benefits for the single user, including:

  • More space for persons who suffer from severe spasms in their legs at night, when using a single or Three Quarter bed, a persons legs may spasm off the bed, using a double bed can help prevent this.

Pressure Care Mattresses

Pressure Care Mattresses, also known as Pressure Relief Mattresses help prevent the formation of pressure ulcers on patients who are confined to bed and have a lack of mobility, movement, or blood circulation. Lack of Blood Circulation together with the constant contact between the body & the mattress creates pressure spots that pinch off the tiny blood vessels, cutting off oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin & underlying tissues thus leading to these pressure sores.

To prevent this from happening, a patient should be turned regularly or ideally use a Pressure Care Mattress, there are a variety of different types of these Mattresses, or other products, which work in different ways to prevent pressure sores, this includes:

  • Alternating Pressure Mattresses
  • Foam & Vacuum Stabilising Mattresses
  • Medical Sheepskins

Alternating Pressure Mattresses

Alternating Pressure Mattresses can be programmed to inflate and deflate at set intervals and are aimed at redistribution of pressure on a patient's’ body. The mattress works by a series of individual cells, which gently inflate & deflate alternately, with the assistance of a pump which pumps air through them. During these periods of pressure reduction, there is a maintenance of blood and oxygen supply to the skin and the underlying tissue is assisted, which helps prevent skin breakdown. Tips To Selecting & Maintaining a Cushion

Once you have selected the type of cushion that suits you, you should remember some of the following:

  • A seat cushion's size should be matched exactly to the wheelchair's seat size
  • Remember that a seat cushion's height adds to the wheelchair's seat-to-floor height, so a taller cushion will cause you to sit taller, accordingly (which can be an issue fitting under tables and desks)
  • If there's a chance that the cushion will be exposed to fluids, an incontinence cover should be used (incontinence covers come included with many cushions)
  • Inspect the cushion regularly for degraded materials or damaged foam
  • With air cushions, confirm proper inflation daily
  • Most cushions have an optimal use life span of two to three years, so for proper performance, replace a cushion when needed.

Wheelchair Backrests

Some persons who use wheelchairs may need a little something extra to support them while they are sitting in their wheelchair. Some Wheelchair backrests are built to be basic, but other Wheelchair Backrests are available which offer additional padding to your back & sides, while also improving your posture and keeping you in an upright position. Choosing the correct backrest can be almost as important as having the correct cushion, especially if you are permanently in a wheelchair or are going to be spending a long of time in a wheelchair. The correct backrest will not only make sure that you are as comfortable as possible and prevent permanent back problems, such as Scoliosis, but can also prevent other back injuries or pressure sores. There are a wide variety of different types of Backrests, that can be used on both manual and motorized wheelchairs and they range in Price, Height, Style and How they protect and support you. You will need to select a backrest that suites you and your needs, this is best done with the help of an Occupational Therapist, or someone who specializes in Seating & Positioning, they will not only make sure you purchase the correct backrest, but also set up you in your chair correctly.

There are a wide variety of different types of backrests which are designed to give different degrees of pressure relief and support, each person is built differently, therefore their needs are different, what works for one person, will not necessarily work for another. These different types of Backrests are available throughout South Africa and are sold by various companies, they include products such as:
