Types of Hoists, Patient Lifters, Slings, Etc.

A Hoist or Patient Lift is an assistive device that is used to transfer persons with Mobility Impairments between a bed and a wheelchair or other similar places. Most hoists are Hydraulic or Electric Powered, these include Wheeled Lifts, which are mobile, Wall Lifts, which are mounted to the wall, or Ceiling Lifts, which are suspended from the ceiling & are mounted or can run on overhead tracks.

All of these Hoists require some way to connect you safely to the Hoist, so that you can move from point A to point B, they include:

  • The Sling Lift & Sling
  • SureHands® Body Support, which is a product from the HandiMove hoist range.
  • A Sit-To-Stand Lift.

The Sling Lift

The Sling Lift has several advantages, it allows heavy patients to be transferred while decreasing stress on caregivers while also reducing the number of nursing staff required to move patients, it also reduces the chance of injury from lifting patients. Patients who have medical conditions that do not allow them to be bent & compressed by the sling as they are hoisted (i.e., cannot withstand "vertical transfer") will require specialized slings which can lift horizontally, or use other assistive devices for transferring.

The other types of transfer device which allow for lateral transfer are stretcher chairs (also called transfer or convertible chairs) that allow patients to be slid or dragged from the bed onto a mobile stretcher that then converts into a mobile chair, and inflatable sliding mats which use air bearing technology to reduce friction during lateral transfer. Other less expensive alternatives are disposable or washable Sliding Sheets/Draw Sheets and Sliding Boards. See Draw Sheets below.

There are also various types of other Slings that are available to purchase in South Africa, these can be purchased from companies such as Prima Care, Sitwell TechnologiesSheer Mobility, Pro Mobility, Mobility Aids and Solutions Medical.

The Sling

Use of the a Sling Lift involves placing a special piece of fabric, called a Sling, under the patient (usually made of woven nylon, cotton, or a similar material to a modern hammock), which can hold the weight of the patient while suspended in air. The fabric is attached to a series of hooks or clips.

There are many variations of the Sling, it is important that a therapist or qualified person do an assessment of the patient's size, weight, and medical condition in order to select the proper sling to avoid injuring the patient during transfer. To reduce the risk of cross infection which is of critical importance in hospitals, the slings are often disposable or patient specific.

One limitation of common slings is that they bend and compress the patient during transfer which can be difficult for patients with painful medical conditions. Most patients must also be "log rolled" onto the Sling prior to being hoisted which makes the transfer process a more complex activity. There are various types of these Slings available from companies in South Africa and includes products such as:Ergolet Universal Sling

Wheeled Hoists

A Wheeled Hoist is free-standing equipment that supports the person being moved in a sling or harness that is suspended from a cantilevered arm. The sling is placed around the person while he or she is seated or lying down. The person is then hoisted up and the hoist is wheeled to the new location, the person is then lowered down. One of the first things to consider is the amount of manoeuvring space a wheeled hoist needs. The wheeled base of the hoist must be wide enough to remain stable with the person in it.Rhino Hoist Consequently, wheeled hoists require a wide and unobstructed path of travel, this is usually at least 1,100 mm (43 1/2 in.) and possibly more if turns are required. Another design consideration is clear space under furniture and fixtures, to accommodate the frame of the hoist. If a wheeled hoist is to be used for transfers in and out of a bathtub, the bathtub should have legs or be raised from the floor so that the hoist frame will fit under the bathtub. There are various types of these Wheeled Hoists which are available in South Africa, they include products such as:

P350 Rhino Patient Lifter: (Pictured right) Has a durable carbon steel frame with high stress areas which have been reinforced. Wall Mounted Lifts

Wall Mounted Lifts are stationary hoists which are mounted to the wall, the base of the hoist is fixed and a support arm pivots to transfer the person sideways. These hoists generally use a sling or harness similar to that of a wheeled hoist, but the SureHands Body Support listed above can also be used. An important consideration for a stationary hoist is the structural strength of the wall it is attached to, the advice of a structural engineer is very important. Other considerations include the arc of the hoist swing (ensure it reaches the necessary elements) and making sure that clear space is available for the wheelchair during the transfer to and from the hoist. There are various types of these Wall Mounted Lifts which are available in South Africa, they include products such as:

The Wall Mount Smart Transfer Person Lift (pictured right) can be wall mounted in a fixed position almost anywhere in the home or the office where The Smart Transfer Person Lift is required for an upright wheelchair to seat transfer. The Wall Mount for The Smart Transfer Person Lift can work on most wall surfaces, including stud walls, brick walls and even on partition walls, as long as the wall has sufficient material to support the weight of the person being transferred. In some rare situations, the use of additional material(s) can be used to help strengthen the wall and spread the load. Ceiling Lifts

A"Ceiling Lift" can be permanently installed on the ceiling of a room in order to save space. A Wheeled Hoist has a wheeled base that requires additional space on the side of the patient's bed during transfer. The Ceiling Lift eliminates this space issue because the patient is supported by ceiling tracks instead of by the wheeled base. It can support "A Sling Lift" and "SureHands® Body Support" There are a variety of products available and each differ slightly.

Ceiling Lifts usually have a "track system" attached to the ceiling for horizontal movement of the patient within the patient's room & often into an adjoining bathroom. Ceiling Lifts also use an overhead electric motor (i.e., they are not hydraulic) They are controlled by a hand-held set of push buttons to raise & lower the patient. In most cases, the same overhead motor is used to move the patient horizontally, but such movement is limited by the placement of the overhead ceiling track system.

There are many important benefits of this including:

  • reducing if not eliminating injuries to the caregiver.
  • Makes it easy to reposition the patient & move them from bed to chair with reduced incidence of pressure ulcers and pneumonia.
  • There is less need for pain medication during such transfers, safer transfers & overall faster recovery.

There are various types of these Ceiling Lifts that are available from various companies in South Africa and includes products such as:

The Luna system is a fixed and portable ceiling hoist in one, simply move the lift motor from one room to another and change tracks. This unique two-in-one feature makes the Luna the preferred ceiling hoist for care facilities providing flexibility. This flexibility is a cost-effective advantage for the institution, one motor can be used in multiple rooms. You can combine Luna with Ergolet’s extensive programme of ceiling and wall mounted tracks, to ensure complete coverage of the rooms, so that the hoist is up and out of the way thereby not taking any room in the house. Patients can be transferred from room to room while in the sling and without having to alter the doorway structure.

Other features include Ergolet’s patented spreader bar and sling hook system ensuring safe and simple sling attachment. The comfortable ergonomic hand control, with its clear function buttons, is designed to help make patient transfer a safe and simple task for the carer.
