Scooters & Shopriders

A Mobility Scooter allows a user with normal balance and foot, knee or hip conditions to unload the lower extremities. Scooters substitute for walking by providing a wheeled device on which the user sits. Mobility Scooters are electrically powered and are useful for persons without the stamina to walk longer distances but who are still able to stand & walk a few steps, sit upright without torso support, & have use of their arms & can control the steering. They include people who Suffer from coronary or lung issues, Some forms of arthritis, Obesity, Some Paraplegics and Amputees, The Elderly, etc. Mobility Scooters are generally more affordable than Motorized Wheelchairs and are therefore a cheaper alternative.

Mobility Scooters have a seat over three, four or now five wheels, a flat area or foot plates for the feet, and handlebars or a delta-style steering arrangement in front to turn one, two or three steerable wheels. The seat may swivel to allow access when the front is blocked by the handlebars. Mobility Scooters are usually battery powered and require a battery or two which are stored on board the Scooter and are charged via an on-board or separate battery charger unit.

The steering column is centrally located at the front of the Scooter & may contain other features such as a speed limiter, lighting controls & turning signals. A battery use indicator is also often also included. The forward/reverse direction can be controlled by thumb paddles, finger controls, or a switch.

Disadvantages of Mobility Scooters Include:

  • The steering mechanism requires shoulder, hand strength, & some upper-body mobility & strength, including an upright posture.
  • Scooters also have fewer options for body support, such as head or leg rest and are rarely designed for ease of patient transfer from seat to bed.
  • There longer length, limits their turning radius & ability to use some lifts or wheelchair-designed ramps around corners. The longer length may also make it difficult to reach door-opener buttons or doorknobs.
  • Some Mobility Scooters have low ground clearance which can make it difficult to navigate certain obstacles, such as traveling in cities without proper curb cuts.
  • Navigating in restricted spaces, whether in the home or in public spaces & buildings can also be a problem.

These limitations may prevent some persons with disabilities from using Scooters but Scooter limitations may vary depending on model & manufacturer. A limitation of one make/model does not necessarily carry over to all Scooters. Four-wheel Scooters have a larger turning radius in general, than a three wheel Scooter. When purchasing a Scooter, you should compare length, width, turning radius & ground clearance to ensure the Scooter will fit with most commonly encountered obstacles in the user's environment.

Wheelchairs

"The wheelchair should not be symbol of disability. A wheelchair is a vehicle to liberation and freedom; a chariot for independence. - Rick Hansen"

Wheelchairs are used by persons with Mobility Impairments who find walking difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, or disability. There are a variety of different types of wheelchairs, with some allowing either manual propulsion by the seated occupant turning the rear wheels by hand, or electric propulsion by motors. There are often handles behind the seat to allow the wheelchair to be pushed by another person. In recent years a combination of manual and electric propulsion have been introduced.

When first injured, and faced with the decision to choose between all the different types of wheelchairs which are available, it is sometimes difficult to know what is an appropriate wheelchair for you. Everyone is different and choosing the wrong wheelchair can lead to a wide range of complications. Click on the link, "What Is An Appropriate Wheelchair?" to find out more about this, or read the article below to find out what types of wheelchairs are available in South Africa.

Manual Wheelchairs

A basic manual wheelchair (pictured right) incorporates a seat, foot rests and four wheels: two caster wheels at the front and two large wheels at the back which usually have handrims, with which the user can propel the chair forward. Most wheelchairs also have two push handles at the top of the backrest to allow for manual propulsion by a second person. Everyone is different and requires different needs, Manual Wheelchairs are therefor often customized for the user's needs. Such customizations may include the seat dimensions, height, seat angle, footrests, leg rests, front casters, anti-tip bars or wheels and safety belts. Some Wheelchairs also offer support for limbs or you neck or head and also include Accessories such as: Wheelchair Bags, Wheelchair Trays/Tables, mounts or carrying devices for crutches, walkers or oxygen tanks, drink holders, & clothing protectors. Visit our Accessories page to find out more about various Accessories available for Wheelchairs in South Africa.

There are also a variety of different types of Manual Wheelchairs. Everyday Manual Wheelchairs come in two major designs:

  • Rigid Wheelchairs
  • Folding Wheelchairs.

"Wheelchairs that have an "X" frame design fold from side to side and are considered folding wheelchairs. An "X" frame is basically the cross-frame members that can be seen when looking under the seat from either the front or back of the wheelchair.

Wheelchairs known as rigid framed will not fold from side to side and are in the non-folding group of wheelchairs. In the wheelchair industry, Rigid Wheelchairs are usually considered wheelchairs that athletes and young sports minded users would be interested in but others can benefit from these wheelchairs as well."

To find out more about the Pros and Cons of Folding vs Rigid wheelchairs, click on the following links below:

Rigid Wheelchairs

Rigid Wheelchairs are increasingly preferred by active users, they have permanently welded joints & fewer moving parts, which reduces the energy required to push the wheelchair by eliminating points where the wheelchair would flex as it moves. Welding the joints also reduces the overall weight of the chair. Rigid chairs typically feature instant-release rear wheels and backrests that fold down flat, allowing the user to dismantle the chair quickly for storage in a car. Visit "Transferring & Loading Wheelchair Into A Vehicle" to find out more.

There are a wide variety of different types of these Rigid Wheelchairs, some are now made from ultralight materials such as aircraft aluminium, titanium or Carbon Fiber. Some of these wheelchairs also include Accessories that can be purchased with the wheelchair or added to the chair later. They include products such as: "Loopwheels Wheels", "Soft Wheels", "Off-Road Wheels" or "Polymer Shock Absorbers", which cushion the bumps over which the chair rolls. Shock Absorbers may be added to the front wheels or to the rear wheels, or both. Other products include the "Icon Nu Drive Lever Propulsion" which can be fitted to your wheelchair, as an alternative to pushing. (Visit our Spares & Accessories section to find out more.)

Rigid Wheelchairs also have the option for their rear wheels to have a camber or tilt, which angles the tops of the wheels in toward the Wheelchair, which allows for better propulsion by the user which is desired by long-term users. Sports Wheelchairs also have large camber angles to improve stability (Visit our "Sports, Exercise & Rehabilitation Equipment" page to find out more about these products.).The Rollability MK2

Tilting Wheelchairs

Alu Rehab Netti 4U CED Tilt-In-Space

Tilting Wheelchairs have seating surfaces which can be tilted to various angles. The original concept was developed by an orthotist who worked with children with disabilities and observed that postural deformities such as scoliosis could be supported or partially corrected by allowing the wheelchair user to relax in a tilted position. When tilting a Wheelchair, the seat-back, seat base, and leg rests tilt back as one unit, similar to the way a person might tip a four-legged chair backwards to balance it on the back legs. Tilting wheelchairs are preferred by people who use molded or contoured seats, who need to maintain a particular posture, they are commonly used by persons with cerebral palsy, muscle diseases, or limited range of motion in the hip or knee joints. Tilting options are more common than reclining options in wheelchairs designed for use by children, or for those who need to keep a communication device, powered wheelchair controls, or other attached device in the same relative position throughout the day. The feature is also of value to users who are unable to sit upright for extended periods for pain or other reasons. Manual Tilting Wheelchairs for adults are available from various companies in South Africa and include products such as:

Vertical movement is necessary in order for people to function and participate in a three-dimensional world. A common intervention that provides vertical mobility within a wheelchair is a seat-elevating device, hence, the provision of a power adjustable seat height (PASH) system. These Height Adjustable Motorized Wheelchairs are medically necessary as they offer a number of advantages including:

  • Enabling transfers across unequal surface heights such as a bed, toilet, or other surfaces, which is a necessary part of the daily routine. This is easily done by adjusting the seat height slightly above the surface to be transferred to a lower surface as gravity assists transferring in a downward direction.
  • Seat elevators may also help reduce secondary complications to the shoulders. Studies have found an association between overhead activity and the development of shoulder pain. Adjusting the height of your Wheelchair can help persons with Mobility Impairments to reach items on shelves or counters as well as light switches, therefor not only assisting to prevent strain on the shoulders but also increasing ones independence.
  • An elevating seat may also allow a person in a wheelchair to hear and engage in conversations within a noisy environment, as well as to see and navigate more safely through a crowd of people. When talking at eye level with others, it reduces the need to look up and relieves strain on the neck and may help enhance vision.
